Explain in detail various challenges of information system confronting the managers.
Answer & Explanation:
Although information technology is advancing at a blinding pace, there is nothing easy or mechanical about building and using information systems. There are five major challenges confronting managers: The Information Systems Investment Challenge: How can organizations obtain business value from their information systems? Managers face the challenge of ensuring meaningful returns from IT investments. Many firms struggle to evaluate IT spending, measure returns, and make clear decisions on which technology investments to pursue and manage. The Strategic Business Challenge: What complementary assets are needed to use information technology effectively? Despite heavy IT investments, many organizations fail to realize significant business value due to a lack of complementary assets. To fully benefit from IT, organizations often need to be redesigned, making fundamental changes in employee behavior, business models, work rules, and organizational structures. New technology alone won't yield meaningful business benefits without these changes. The Globalization Challenge: How can firms understand the business and system requirements of a global economic environment? The rapid growth of international trade demands information systems that support global operations. Historically, regional offices of multinationals focused on their unique problems, leading to chaos due to language, cultural, and political differences. Developing integrated multinational systems requires global hardware, software, and communication standards, cross-cultural accounting, and transnational business processes. The Information Technology Infrastructure Challenge: How can organizations develop an information technology infrastructure that can support their goals when business conditions and technologies are changing so rapidly? Many companies are burdened with expensive, unwieldy IT platforms that hinder innovation. Their systems are often complex and brittle, acting as constraints on business strategy. Meeting new challenges requires redesigning the organization and building a new IT infrastructure. Creating this infrastructure for a digital firm is formidable, as many companies are crippled by fragmented and incompatible systems that prevent free information flow. Ethics and Security: The responsibility and control challenge: How can organizations ensure that their information systems are used in an ethically and socially responsible manner? How can we design information systems that people can control and understand? Information systems bring enormous benefits but also create ethical and social problems. Managers must make informed decisions sensitive to both positive and negative consequences. Maintaining security and control is an ongoing struggle, with threats of unauthorized access or disruption ever-present. Systems must be secure, accurate, reliable, and controllable by humans. Managers need to ensure high-quality assurance, tight security that is user-friendly, respect privacy rights, and address job displacement due to efficiency gains.
