Sohan has two different demat accounts, one account with one depository and the other with a second depository. Can he transfer the shares from one depository account to the other depository account? Explain.

Answer & Explanation:

Yes, Sohan can transfer the shares from his first account to the other account. Transfer of securities from an account in one depository to an account in another depository is termed as an 'inter-depository transfer'. This can be done only for securities that are available for dematerialisation on both the depositories. The process involves: Sohan has to obtain an inter-depository Delivery Instruction Slip (DIS) from his first depository participant. He needs to fill in the details on the slip, specifying the shares he wants to transfer, along with the client ID and DP ID of the other account. The completed DIS should be delivered to the depository participant from which he wants to deposit the shares (the first depository participant).
