What are the directions placed by the Supreme Court in 'M.C. Mehta Vs. Union of India', AIR 1115, 1988, SCR (2) 530 to the Government to create awareness of environment among people?
Answer & Explanation:
In 'M.C. Mehta vs. Union of India' - 1988 SCR (2) 530 the Supreme Court directed that the work of those tanneries be stopped, which were discharging effluents in River Ganga and which did not set up primary effluent treatment plants. The Supreme Court held that the financial capacity of the tanners to set up primary effluent treatment plants was wholly irrelevant. The Supreme Court directed the Government to- to impart lessons in natural environment in educational institutions; to consult permanent independent centers with professional public spirited experts to provide the necessary scientific and technological information to the court; to set up environmental courts on regional basis with a right to appeal before the Supreme Court. to form a group of experts in environment to aid and advise the court to facilitate judicial decisions.
