State the different models of GST and the model which is followed in India.

Answer & Explanation:

Different countries follow different models of GST based upon their own legislative and administrative structure and requirements. The following are some of the significant models: Australian Model where the tax is collected by the Centre and distributed to the States. Canadian Model where there are 3 variants of taxes. Kelkar-Shah Model based on Canadian Model where taxes are collected by the Centre, however, two different rates of tax are to be levied by the Centre and the States. Bagchi-Poddar Model which envisages a combination of Central Excise, Service Tax and makes it a common base of GST, it is to be levied both by the Centre and the States separately. Considering the federal nature of Indian Constitution, dual model of GST is levied in India. GST is levied both by Centre as well as the States and there are separate levies in the form of CGST/SGST and IGST. Currently Brazil and Canada follow dual GST model like India.
