Explain Ansoff Growth Matrix. How does it help organisations in choosing growth strategies? Are there any limitations to this growth strategy?
Answer & Explanation:
Answer 2A(iii) The Ansoff Growth Matrix, developed by Igor Ansoff, is a strategic planning tool used to identify and evaluate growth opportunities based on products and markets. The four Strategies include: 1. Market Penetration (Existing Product - Existing Market) Market penetration strategy is the preferred route to growth for many businesses because its focus is on selling more of the existing products to Current customers; Customers similar to current customer base but who are buying competitors' products; and who have need of product but aren't buying it yet. The emphasis is on escalating market share by making some rigorous marketing promotions, or by creating more customer value. 2. Market Development (Existing Product - New Market) This strategy helps the business to take the current products and find new markets for them. The strength of this option from the Ansoff Growth matrix is that it puts the pressure on the marketing and sales functions of the business and leaves the operations/supply side to concentrate on what it does best. 3. Product Development (New Product - Existing Market) In product development, businesses continue to focus on the needs of existing customer base and also the widen customer market they represent but they seek to understand their underlying needs so they can see opportunities for new products. 4. Diversification (New Product - New Market) Diversification is the risky growth strategy if it requires the development of new resources and capabilities. This option is the most controversial since diversification involves taking new products to new customers. The big advantage of diversification is that if it is successful, it reduces the overall risk of the business to factors outside of the control of the business like the wider economic environment, climate change etc. Reasons for choosing Growth Strategies by the organizations It helps in systematic evaluation of growth options. It assists in risk assessment. It provides a clear strategic direction for expansion. Limitations of Growth Strategy It oversimplifies complex business situations. It does not consider external environmental factors. It ignores internal capabilities and resources. The Ansoff Matrix provides a structured approach to growth strategy selection, but should be used along with other strategic tools for effective decision-making.
